Duty changes to know in 2026
- The US suspended the $800 de minimis exemption for all countries on 29 August 2025, so every import parcel is now dutiable.
- The EU ended the €150 duty exemption on 1 July 2026 and now charges an interim €3 duty per item category (tariff sub-heading).
- Canada's federal GST is 5%; Nova Scotia's HST fell from 15% to 14% on 1 April 2025.
FAQ
How is US import duty calculated?
US duty is the transaction value (usually FOB, excluding international freight) times the rate for the product's 10-digit HTS code, plus any additional duties such as Section 301. Since 29 August 2025, parcels under $800 are no longer duty-free.
How are EU import duty and VAT calculated?
The EU assesses duty on CIF value (including freight and insurance); import VAT is charged on CIF plus duty. From 1 July 2026, consignments of €150 or less pay a flat €3 duty per item category instead.
What taxes apply when importing into Canada?
Canada charges duty on the value for duty, then 5% GST (or HST in harmonized provinces) on value plus duty. GST/HST-registered sellers can usually claim import GST/HST back as an input tax credit.
